Imagine your product is part of a Godzilla-sized robot as a UX design exercise

Giant lizard creature and giant robot in a city with regular scale people

How could this not go well? Some places I've worked that's not a comfortable question to ask. I try to ask this in a way that makes it clear: learning about constraints and conflicts sooner helps us do better.

Here's a playful yet tangible-enough metaphor to consider:

Let's imagine the organization you're part of as a robot roughly the same size as Godzilla.

  • Your product is one part of that big robot.
  • You wield great power and are wielded by great power being part of your giant robot.
  • Imagine the giant robot you're in is handing a flower to a regular scale person. Your product is the flower. How will you include, learn, design so that this exchange is a good experience for the person?

The difference in power and possibilities for things to go wrong are easy to imagine. Making it safe and constructive to see the negative is a useful place for you and your team to visit.
